Flexibility Optimization Benchmark with EPC

Benchmarking Flexibility Optimization: Real World Performance, 2024 Germany
Selecting the right partner for flexibility optimization is a strategic decision for asset owners. Performance differences translate directly into financial outcomes, yet reliable comparisons are difficult to obtain. Backtests are often the only available proxy, while real-world performance benchmarks remain rare.
EP Commodities (EPC) recently created such a benchmark by allocating three assets in Germany, with a combined ~10 MW of flexibility, to three competing optimizers — including Second Foundation. Over the course of 2024, each provider managed one flexibility block, with results measured on a like-for-like basis.
The findings speak for themselves: Second Foundation delivered outperformance of 18% and 24% against the two competitors. On the strength of these results, EPC has decided to contract Second Foundation exclusively for all three blocks from 2025 onward.

Michal Novotny, Lead of Trading at EPC, commented:
“Second Foundation’s flexibility service consistently delivers exceptional performance, often surpassing that of their competitors. Moreover, I would like to highlight the error-free nominations and day-after process. Their technical execution is seamless, ensuring reliable and efficient service delivery, which is rare in this space.”

We are proud of this outcome and of the trust placed in us. Today, Second Foundation manages over 350 MW of flexible assets globally — including stand-alone and co-located BESS, as well as other flexible resources.
For asset owners, the message is clear: robust optimization unlocks measurable value. If you are evaluating options for your BESS or other flexible assets in Germany, our team in Berlin would be pleased to discuss how we can support you.
